A Theory of Conditionals Based on Hierarchies of Situations
نویسنده
چکیده
We present an approach to the semantics of subjunctive conditionals based on the situation semantics notion of a constraint, in which the connection between antecedent A and consequent B of a conditional ‘if A were the case, B would be’ is an informational relation between types of situations. We also argue that the information contained in a hierarchy of planning schemas as commonly used in Artificial Intelligence enables an agent to represent the semantic objects involved in evaluating conditionals and thus to understand a subclass of subjunctive conditionals. A logic of situations based on modelling situations as sets of possible worlds is given; then a logic of conditionals based on hierarchies of situations is presented. The bridge between the logic and the planning representation is an explicit construction showing how a hierarchy of situations suitable for evaluating conditionals can be generated from a collection of planning schemas. We conclude with a discussion of the theory, including the paradoxes of conditional implication, the difference between truth conditions and assertibility conditions for subjunctive conditionals, the relationship between subjunctive and indicative conditionals, conditionals and explanation, competing conditionals and the conditional excluded middle, and ‘might’ conditionals.

An extended hesitant group decision-making technique based on the prospect theory for emergency situations
Throughout the present manuscript, we are going to introduce a novel group emergency decision-making technique in which the application of prospect theory explains the psychological behaviour of the decision maker who is affected by the hesitancy and uncertainty of cognition in decision making problems.\Instead of usual aggregation procedure, we implement here a new fusion technique that ...
متن کاملComprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners
A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...
متن کاملA Critical Examination of Ibn-Sina’s Theory of the Conditional Syllogism
This paper will examine Ibn Sina’s theory of the Conditional Syllogism from a purely logical point of view, and will lay bare the principles he adopted for founding his theory, and the reason why the newly introduced part of his logic remained undeveloped and eventually was removed from the texts of logic in the later Islamic tradition. As a preliminary discussion, this paper briefly examines I...
متن کاملAn Information-Based Theory of Conditionals
We present an approach to combining three areas of research which we claim are all based on information theory: knowledge representation in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science using prototypes, plans, or schemata; formal semantics in natural language, especially the semantics of the ‘if-then’ conditional construct; and the logic of subjunctive conditionals first developed using a poss...
متن کاملDeductive reasoning with factual, possible, and counterfactual conditionals.
We compared reasoners' inferences from conditionals based on possibilities in the present or the past (e.g., "If Linda had been in Dublin then Cathy would have been in Galway") with their inferences based on facts in the present or the past (e.g., "If Linda was in Dublin then Cathy was in Galway"). We propose that people construct a richer representation of conditionals that deal with possibili...
